A 26-year-old woman, Ifeoma Okaze, a native of Okwerike Village in Abaomege, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has been arrested and arraigned by the Ebonyi State Police Command for allegedly burying her five-month-old daughter alive.
The tragic incident took place on a piece of empty land behind her yam barn, where she is said to have dug a shallow grave and buried the baby, Miss Roseline, who was still breastfeeding at the time.
According to the police, Ifeoma confessed that she took the action as a way to get back at her husband, following constant arguments and fights over allegations of infidelity. She claimed that the emotional stress and repeated accusations pushed her to commit the unthinkable act.
A neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, narrated that the couple had quarreled earlier that morning. After the usual argument over the woman’s alleged late nights, Ifeoma reportedly bathed and fed baby Roseline, who then fell asleep. She left the child in the care of her siblings and went out.
The child’s disappearance went unnoticed until the mother returned and attempted to breastfeed her, only to find the baby missing. A search ensued, and suspicions eventually led to the grim discovery.
Ifeoma is currently being held at the Abakaliki Federal Prison, while investigations continue. The Ebonyi State Police Command has vowed to ensure justice is served for the innocent child.
